Flight Distance Calculator

Estimate the great-circle distance between any two airports worldwide. Uses open coordinate data from OurAirports with a client-side haversine calculation — no server calls, no API keys.

Great-circle distance

From airport to airport

How this works

Great-circle distance, calculated in your browser.

This tool uses the haversine formula to calculate the great-circle distance — the shortest path between two points on a sphere. Each airport's latitude and longitude come from the public-domain OurAirports dataset, loaded once in your browser.

The result is an estimate. Actual flight distance varies based on air traffic control routing, wind patterns, airspace restrictions, and approach procedures. Use this for planning estimates, not operational flight planning.

For precise flight distances, check with your airline, flight dispatcher, or aviation navigation tools.

Popular airport distance examples

Common long-haul routes in air miles and kilometers.

Use these examples as a sense check before searching your own route. The calculator uses the same airport-to-airport distance method for every pair.

LHR to JFK London Heathrow to New York JFK

About 5,570 km or 3,461 miles by great-circle distance.

NRT to LAX Tokyo Narita to Los Angeles

About 8,770 km or 5,449 miles by great-circle distance.

SYD to AKL Sydney to Auckland

About 2,160 km or 1,342 miles by great-circle distance.

Flight distance FAQ

Airport-to-airport distance basics.

How accurate is a flight distance calculator?

This calculator estimates great-circle distance between airport coordinates. Real flight distance can be longer because airlines follow air traffic routes, weather patterns, airspace restrictions, and approach procedures.

Can I use this for air miles and kilometers?

Yes. The result shows both kilometers and miles, which makes it useful for quick air miles and kilometers estimates between two airports.

Why does airport-to-airport distance differ from flight time?

Flight time depends on aircraft type, wind, routing, taxi time, and air traffic control. Distance is only one input, so use this tool for planning estimates rather than operational flight planning.
